Substance Use Disorder alters brain function, leading to a loss of control over drug use despite harmful consequences. It can begin with recreational use or with prescribed medications like opioids or benzodiazepines — and progress to dependence faster than most people expect.

Over time, repeated use reshapes brain structure, affecting perception, memory, judgment, and decision-making in ways that can become permanent without treatment. Left unaddressed, the condition can become life-threatening. It is also progressive: it rarely improves on its own, and neither the individual nor the family can resolve it alone.
