Dysthymia — also known as Persistent Depressive Disorder — is a chronic, low-grade form of depression. Unlike a major depressive episode, it doesn’t announce itself; it settles in slowly and can last for years, sometimes alongside occasional episodes of more severe depression.
Because it comes on so gradually, dysthymia is often mistaken for personality rather than a treatable condition. People affected by it are frequently seen as negative, moody, or pessimistic — “they’ve always been like this” — which leads both the person and those around them to assume nothing can change.
That perception is exactly what makes dysthymia so difficult to catch. Its impact accumulates quietly over the years, and diagnosis often comes only after decades of unexplained struggle.
